Quick Question: What would you guys prefer: Should I go active if I am not entirely sure of wanting to leave my family (a lot of personal issues I wont divulge here). Like would you think its better to go reserve, get my training and work a 12/hr job while doing my weekend stint or go active. I know its a personal preference, but I figure if I like the Army life I can go active after 2 years (as I am told) but since I dont know if I want the Army life everyday, would it be best to do reserves? Get a job and work on getting my Masters?

I wouldn't think of the Reserves as a way to "sample" what the Army is all about, especially when we have a war happening on multiple fronts.  However, if you have a passion to serve but have other personal issues that confine you to a specific geographic location, then the Reserves may be a good choice.

Recognize that in the Army Reserve you will get the crappiest hand-me-down stuff that the Army has to offer.  The Big Army isn't known for quality treatment of its soldiers, so you can only imagine where a Reserve unit ranks on its priority list.  I don't mean to bash on the Army since I know several current and retired soldiers among family and close friends, but if you are going Reserves you better have the same passion that you would have for an active duty role (meaning you aren't joining just to sample the fare); otherwise the all mountains of crap that you will have to deal with will just eat you alive.

Likewise, you have a couple of days to accomplish the training that active units get done in a month.  If you are an officer, your time in drill will expand beyond the actual drill hours (training plans don't get written by themselves and someone has to make sure the shop is good to go before drill and is properly secured afterward).  Nevertheless, if your family issues are that serious, getting stationed on AD in a remote area of the country or overseas might be a problem.

we can help you with contracts and advice on which service etc, but this type of question is best left to you and your family to decide.  Sorry, but i don't think anyone can tell you which is better or nor should they.

Yea i figured as much.
Thanks for all the help. I want to do Reserves, but I dont get any sign on really if I go OCS/reserves. (So I just need to see if that loan repayment thing I was told about also goes towards the reserves + a civilian job)

I asked my cousin in law (the lt. colonel) if he can write me a recommendation, so I am waiting for his response on that.

Thanks for all the help, hopefully he is willing to write one (as he doesnt know me to well) and hopefully I make it infront of the selection board successfully.

I agree 100pct regarding the family issues, but regardless of what anyone has going on in their personal lives, I just don't think using the Reserves to "give the Army a try" is a great idea.  ("I figure if I like the Army life I can go active after 2 years (as I am told) but since I dont know if I want the Army life everyday, would it be best to do reserves?").  There are plenty of people with civilian commitments that preclude them from AD service, but that's a different story than signing on just to get a feel for military life.  However, if you have a passion to serve, but your best (or possibly only) ticket to entry is a Reserve contract, then you take what you can get.  I think it just comes down to having a passion for putting on the uniform and doing the job above all else, whether it is one weekend a month or whether it is a full time vocation.

Very true AP. I just meant I dont know if the full military life is for me at this time. Everyone that I have talked to (outside of you guys) says I am still young and I am worrying to much about the loan thing, and that maybe I should do the reserves, get a feel for the military life and then go active otherwise use it as more of a gateway and put on a different type of uniform (i have applied for police jobs months ago and I am beginning to get some interviews set ups). However I am going to talk to my recruiter and hopefully have us lay out the pros and cons to everything, including all the money, the benefits, the options. I am not against going active, i just dont know if thats for me, at this stage in my life. I dont think I should go active if I have these doubts either.

But anyways, you guys have been a great help and I will keep you guys in the loop on what happens.

Update: Havent really talked to my recruiter in about 3.5 weeks. I briefly talked to him last week (he answered the phone in a good one but hung up in a bad one). I told him how my buddy wants to do reserves and how I would go in with my buddy after th esummer(only free time for my friend) and then I want to go to OCS for reserve training, and he responded with "I dont know, I dont know, I really dont know, Ill call you tomororw" and Never did.

I say this half jesting:  You're driving that poor recruiter nuts with all your dithering and fence sitting.

Hah, Well we were suppose to renegotiate my contract, we never did. he never contacted me so  I didnt know what was going on. Then when I finally called him, 2 weeks later to see what was going on, I decided I prefer to do reserves sine I had a chance to think (and have jobs get back to me). I have no idea where this is going to go, we will see.

He just called me: He said its a totally different process for me to go from Active duty to Reserves then even more of a process to go and get OCS.

So I might just ask for my discharge tomorrow if I dont get what I am looking for.

This is everything I gathered fro todays talk:

Reserve side:
I would have to become DEP Loss (get removed from the army Active duty and reapply as a reservist)
Then i have two options:
1)I can go to OCS, but I wont get Military Intelligence, I might end up with something I do not want (truck driver)
----If I decided to go OCS reserves, my rank wouldnt carry over if I decided to go Active. Its different from active to reserves however
2) There isnt any reserve unit that carries Military intelligence within 100mile radius of where I live.
-----I would have to travel to about Maryland, if I decided to go thru all of this
------------If I go enlisted reserves, the chance of me getting OCS int he future is slimmer because i would already have a DEP loss to my name

Active Duty:
I reno my contract and get M.I, then wait two years before I apply for OCS(by that time I will be rank of Sergeant)

My goal in life is to work for FBI, NSA...and I would get security clearance by doing an MI job. I just dont know if I want to do active duty over reserves. So gotta weigh i tall
